FRIDAY: QUITO – COCA – NAPO RIVER
Begin your adventure in Quito, the vibrant capital of Ecuador. From here, embark on a quick 30-minute flight to the Amazonian city of Coca. Upon arrival, transfer to the dock and board a motorized canoe for a scenic 90-minute journey down the majestic Napo River. As you navigate through the heart of the Amazon, marvel at the lush surroundings until you reach the Manatee Amazon Explorer, where a warm welcome awaits you.
Onboard the Manatee, expert local naturalist guides will provide an informative introduction to the wonders of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Take this opportunity to explore the cruise ship and soak in the breathtaking rainforest landscapes as you glide along the river.
In the evening, delight in a delicious dinner prepared with local flavors. Afterwards, embark on a thrilling nighttime forest walk, guided by our experts, to experience the captivating sounds of the rainforest and observe the diverse nocturnal wildlife.
SATURDAY: PAÑACOCHA, THE MYTHICAL PIRANHA LAGOON
Our adventure continues as we travel downstream to the Pañayacu River delta. Here, we will embark on a thrilling canoe trip to Pañacocha Lake, known as «Piranha Lagoon» in the native Kichwa language. This unique ecosystem, flooded by blackwater river waters, is teeming with wildlife.
The protected rainforest surrounding Pañacocha Lake is a haven for primates, diverse bird species, and a variety of aquatic animals. Keep an eye out for piranhas, the massive Paíche or pirarucu (one of the world’s largest freshwater fish), and the elusive white caiman. Our expert guides will lead us on a nature walk, where we’ll have the chance to observe these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.
After exploring the lush rainforest, we’ll recharge with a delicious Amazon-style barbeque at a community camp. Following a short rest, dive into aquatic activities such as kayaking and swimming in the pristine waters.
Back on board the Manatee Amazon Explorer, we will deepen our understanding of the region with an informative talk from our knowledgeable guides. This enriching experience will provide valuable insights into the unique biodiversity and cultural heritage of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
SUNDAY: PARROT CLAY LICKS AND AMAZON COMMUNITIES
Embark on an early morning adventure aboard our motorized canoes to witness one of the Western Amazon’s most extraordinary spectacles—the famous parrot clay licks. This mineral-rich site attracts hundreds of vibrant parrots, parakeets, and other Amazonian birds, providing a colorful display as they gather to lick the clay, which aids in their digestion and overall health.
In the afternoon, we will visit the Kichwa women’s community project. Here, you’ll gain insight into the indigenous lifestyle along the Napo River, exploring their ancestral culture and community practices. Support the local community by purchasing unique handicrafts, local products, and souvenirs. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in the Charapas Turtle Conservation project, a collaborative effort we support alongside the community to protect this endangered species.
MONDAY: RETURN
As our Amazon adventure comes to an end, we will begin our journey back to Puerto Providencia. After a final breakfast on board the Manatee Amazon Explorer, we will disembark and board our motorized canoe for a scenic ride back to the city of Coca. Cherish the last glimpses of the Amazon’s breathtaking beauty as we make our way back.
